As we near the completion of the 1923 Cummins Map project, we are currently adding approximately 110,000 names into MANI. Each name will connect to one or more ¼ section of land in Manitoba.

When complete, you’ll be able to enter a surname, find an initial of the first name and view a map pin that shows exactly where your ancestor lived and who their neighbours were. Additionally, you’ll see how far they had to walk to go to school!

21 members and 3 out-of-province ex-members have indexed almost all of the 87 areas so far. However, we still have 7 to do.

Become an Active Member at MGS

Active members not only join MGS and possibly one of the branches, but they also help in many ways to further our goals. One such goal is the ongoing 1923 Cummins Map project described above, for which we need volunteers to index remaining areas.

We also have 3 additional ongoing indexing projects: Local History Books, Pedigree Charts, and Donated Family Trees. Once indexed, these documents will be searchable on MANI.

Volunteering at the Resource Centre is a great meeting place for people who ‘speak’ genealogy and want to support others with their family history research.

If you’re interested in getting involved, email Rick Brown at projects@mbgenealogy.com or our volunteer coordinator at volunteer@mbgenealogy.com.

Our ongoing indexing projects

We need volunteers to support with the following indexing projects.

Local History Books

We’ve already indexed a substantial amount of local history books with the help of researchers like you. Still, many more books are waiting to be done.

This is a great project for anyone who can’t make it into the Resource Centre or who would prefer to index remotely in Canada. If you have an internet connection, you can index!

Pedigree Charts

We have a collection of pedigree charts from MGS members in the 1980s. Indexing pedigree charts will create a spreadsheet featuring 5 generations.

This project takes place at the Resource Centre. If you would like to join us, you will be in good company!

Donated Family Trees

This is an indexing project that is made possible by donors. It includes over 1400 donated trees in pamphlets and bound books. Like indexing the Pedigree Charts, indexing the family trees will create a 5 generation spreadsheet.

If you’d like to get involved, let us know. We’ll work with you to arrange the best day of week for indexing at the Resource Centre. Additionally, you might be able to sign out pamphlets and bound books to index at home if you can’t come in regularly.

So, if you’d like to support MGS and others’ family history research, please get in touch with projects@mbgenealogy.com or volunteer@mbgenealogy.com. We’d love to have you!
