John White SEATER (1864-1944)

Born at Leith, Scotland on 08 November 1864, he came to Manitoba in 1891 and settled on a farm near Rivers in 1898.

On 04 January 1899, he married Bernice “Bessie” Baily (1877-1942) and they had two children: George Smith Seater (1899-1997), and Margaret Mabel Seater (1907-1925).

Farmer, Municipal Official

Active in municipal affairs, he was a councillor for the Rural Municipality of Daly from 1904 to 1913, and its Reeve from 1926 to 1940. For several years he was a member of the executive of the Union of Manitoba Municipalities. He was Secretary-Treasurer of Lothair School No. 678 for 30 years and he also served on the executive of the Manitoba School Trustees Association. He was Clerk of the Vestry for St. Matthew’s Church Ancrum and was Secretary of the Lothair Local of United Grain Growers.

He suffered a stroke in 1940 which left him unable to speak. He died at Brandon on 17 August 1944 and was buried in Ancrum Cemetery.
