Manitoba Day and Manitoba Women Celebrated at MGS

We had a very successful Celebration of Manitoba Day and Manitoba Women at MGS on Saturday, May 11, 2024.  We were open from noon to 4 pm, and we had people starting to arrive at 11:30 am.  Of course, we welcomed them in.

We had a lovely display of women’s items from yesteryear.  From old fashion jewellery to cookbooks to magazines to purses and gloves.   Take a look through our picture gallery of items below—some of which are for sale.  Please email contact@mbgenealogy.com if you like to purchase any items you see.

We had 15 attendees who signed in, although some came with their partner so our numbers were a little higher.  Our six volunteers were very busy giving tours, helping people with their genealogical research, and restoring photos.  We helped visitors find obituaries, land records, wills of family members, as well as showed many how to access Manitoba Vital Statistics, Cemetery Transcripts, and more.  At MGS, we hear many interesting stories as we help people with their genealogy.  This was the most heartwarming story that emerged today—so suitable for Mother’s Day.

“My mother passed away when I was 4 yrs old. I know very little about my family. Today, with the help of a volunteer, I was able to find a bridal shower announcement with a list of gifts received by my mother in a newspaper clipping. I learned that the tea set that I had all these years was one of the gifts my mother received. I was so excited to learn this information, and it is so fitting for Mother’s Day to learn this.”

We would like to thank the volunteers for this event—both before and during the event:  Aleta Foreman, Kathryn Blair-Colbert, Bob Allebone, Kathy Kristjansson, Kerri James, Daryl Dumanski, and Angela Fiebelkorn.

Our next open house is May 25 and 26 for Doors Open Winnipeg, and is free of charge.  We are having a Raffle, a giant Book Sale, and an Art Sale.  Drop by Saturday, May 25, 11 – 4 pm and Sunday, May 26, 1 – 4 pm.  If you want to access our resources to work on your family tree, you are welcome here.

That’s The Spirit WINE Tasting event is being held May 30th from 7 pm to 9 pm.  Tickets are only $20 and available on Eventbrite.

Thank you for the great turnout.  Consider coming again for Doors Open Winnipeg or our Wine Tasting event.  Hope to see you again.
