#Giving Tuesday

The Annual MGS Fundraising Campaign kicks off with Giving Tuesday on November 28th and runs through December 31, 2023.

You’ve heard about #BlackFriday and #CyberMonday, but what about #GivingTuesday?

The Manitoba Genealogical Society is participating in this International Day of Giving. We can’t wait to bring our community together to support and assist those interested in the pursuit of family history and help preserve our Manitoba heritage.

This year, our goal is to raise funds to repair ten copies of the Henderson Directories in our library and to help upgrade our library system.

Henderson Directories and Canada Voters Lists are used as “census substitutes” since there is no Canadian census available to the public after 1931. The MGS Resource Centre holds a collection of Henderson Directories dating from 1876 – 2000. Henderson’s Directories can be used for many distinct types of historical research. They present a rich primary source for demographic information, illustrating patterns of settlement across urban areas in Western Canada. Advertisements can be used as visual illustrations of consumer and social trends. They can be used to trace the history of the cities’ and urban planning around infrastructure and public works.

Because they are an invaluable resource, they are in high demand. As a result, several volumes have become damaged. While all the volumes require some repair, we have identified ten volumes that require immediate attention.

We want to raise $3,000 to repair these ten volumes.  Your contribution is greatly appreciated! Tax receipts will be issued for any donation more than $15.00.

You can make your donation using either CanadaHelps.org or directly by credit card through PayPal or by cheque made payable to the Manitoba Genealogical Society. To use one of these options, visit our website at https://mbgenealogy.com/how-you-can-help/donate/
