The main objectives of MGS are:
- To assist researchers trace their family history wherever in the world they may have come from.

Projects
MGS always has projects and programming on the go. Some of these projects are ongoing. Some projects are one-time projects. Our projects change regularly and we have a long list of things we would like to accomplish with our volunteers.
One of our main on-going projects is to continue to add information to our Manitoba Name Index (MANI). This is done by volunteers who add not just names to our index, but where possible links to additional information on those names we add. Many times we have information in our Resource Library that we do not have copyright permission to make available online (which can be accessed by our Research Team for those who cannot come to our Resource Centre). We add data from sources like:
- Articles
- Birth
- Burial
- Census
- Christening/Baptism
- Church Marriage
- Church Record
- Cemetery Transcription
- Death
- Employment Record
- Funeral Card
- Family History
- In Memoriams
- Local History
- Marriage
- Newspapers
- Note to Creditors
- Obituary
- Publication Index
- Servant Record
- Vital Statistics
