Jean-Henri LAGASSE (1925-1991)

Jean-Henri was born at Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan on 21 September 1925. He was the son of Stanislas Lagasse (1885-1950) and Miséa Nobert (1885-1953).

He married Anne Flavelle Bradshaw and they had four children: Robert, George, Maurice and Suzanne.

Jean moved to Manitoba in 1938 and received a BA degree from the St. Boniface College in 1947. He later received a MA degree from Columbia University in 1956.

Civil Servant

Jean was a Manitoba director of the Canadian Citizenship Branch office, head of the Research Committee for the Manitoba Royal Commission on Indians and Métis, and a consultant on Indigenous and Métis affairs for the federal government (1959) and the Province of Manitoba (1960).

He was a beloved friend of the Native People of Canada and lifetime advocate of Bi-Culturalism in Canada. He was President of the Manitoba Federation of Home and School Associations.

Jean-Henri died at Victoria, BC on 02 August 1991 and his ashes interred in the Notre Dame de Lorette Roman Catholic Cemetery.
