Gudmundur Julius (Mundy) JOHNSON (1890-1963)

Mundy was born in Hof í Vopnafirði, Norðu-Múlaprófastsdæmi, Iceland on 18 November 1890 as Gudmundur Julius Björnson. He was the son of Björn Jónsson (1844-1901) and Guðrún Grímsdóttir (1848-1934). He immigrated to Canada about 1892 with his family and they settled in the Gimli, Manitoba area. His last name was anglicized to Johnson.

On 14 June 1914 in Gimli, Manitoba, he married Kristin Valgardson (1892-1973) and they had one child: Eileen Soffia (1926-2008, wife of William Donald Mitchell Stewart).

Barber

He lived in Winnipeg for 47 years and was a Master barber.

He was an active member of the Men’s Club of the First Lutheran Church and St. Boniface Golf Club. He was active in curling in Winnipeg and an honorary life member of the Gimli Curling Club.

Mundy died at Winnipeg on 13 November 1963 and was buried in the Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in Winnipeg.
