 Businessman

George was a pioneer citizen of Winnipeg. He had spent a few years in the southern states before he caught the “Red River fever” and arrived with his family in 1874. Shortly after his arrival at Fort Garry he obtained employment at Brown & Rutherford, a lumber manufacturer. In 1877, he was appointed tax collector for the City of Winnipeg, a position he held for over 30 years, retiring in 1908. He saw Winnipeg grow from a scattered frontier hamlet of 3,000 people to a metropolitan city of over 200,000. As tax collector, he witnessed the same growth when in his first year in the position the collection was $40,000 and in his last year the collection was $2,000,000.

He was active in the community and served several terms on the board of public school trustee, holding the position of chairman of the finance committee; was an office holder of the Court Rupert I.O.F., occupying the position of financial secretary for 18 years; and a member of the Westminster Presbyterian church

George died at Winnipeg on 23 February 1915 and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery.
