Frank Alanson FAIRCHILD (1849-1898)

Frank was born in Oakland, Ontario on 07 December 1849. He was the son of Francis Gore Fairchild (1820-1897) and Priscilla Jane Harris (1820-1862). In 1868 he entered into a partnership with his brother-in-law, Henry Shaver Wesbrook, and sold agricultural implements in Brant County. They sold the Harris reaper and other lines. In 1872, he moved to Green bush, near Galesburg, Illinois with his brother, Isaac, and started farming and stock trading.

On 06 September 1871, he married Mary Ida Baldwin (1854-1947) in Warren, Illinois, USA and they had five children: Nellie Inez (1873-1942, wife of Henry Rolston), Lynette “Nettie” Elberta (1874-1948, wife of Alexander Douglas), Mary Baldwin (1876-1959, wife of William Hogg), Jennie “Lyle” (1881-1970, wife of Harris Popplewell/Digby “Spence” Large) and Charles Newton (1885-1942).

 Businessman

In 1877 Frank, again, entered into a partnership with H.S. Wesbrook to open sell agricultural implements in Manitoba. in March 1878, he arrived in Manitoba with a carload of horses and agricultural implements and Wesbrook & Fairchild was established. In 1888, the partnership dissolved and Frank established his own company, F.A. Fairchild & Co. with his brothers, James and Isaac. They built the first regular implement warehouse in Winnipeg, which can still be seen today at 255 Sutherland Avenue. Their company building is still stainding at 110-120 Princess Street.

Frank was generous to a fault and his character was honorable. He was a member of the Prairie Parking Driving Association and served on the board of the Winnipeg Industrial Exhibition.

He died at Winnipeg on 09 October 1898 and was buried in the Brookside Cemetery.
